From Phoenix Park and Dublin Bay to Howth and the Wicklow hills: twelve easy, local first dates.

A drink in the pub is fine. But Dublin has big parks, a coastline you can reach by train, free museums and galleries, canal walks, markets and a lively theatre scene, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early or stretch out if it's going well. Here are twelve ideas in and around Dublin.

Green space and the sea

1. Phoenix Park

One of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe, with wide open grassland, wild deer and plenty of benches. A walk from the Parkgate Street end towards the Wellington Monument is an easy, relaxed first date, and there's a café to stop at on the way.

2. Dollymount Strand and the Bull Island

A long sandy beach and nature reserve in Clontarf, reached by a causeway. A windy walk by the sea gives you plenty to talk about, and it's simple to keep short or stretch out. Check the weather and the tide times before you set off.

3. The Howth Cliff Path

A scenic walk round the headland at Howth, with sea views, heather in summer and a lighthouse on the way. Fish and chips by the harbour afterwards is a classic. Wear proper shoes, check the weather and stay on the path.

4. Killiney Hill and Dalkey

A short climb to a park with a wide view over Dublin Bay and the Wicklow coast, followed by a coffee or a bite to eat in Dalkey village. It's an easy Dart ride from the city centre, which makes the journey part of the date.

Culture and history

5. The National Gallery or the National Museum

Both are free to enter, both are in the centre of the city and both are full of things to talk about. Pick one room or one painting each and swap notes over a coffee. Check opening times and any charges for special exhibitions before you go.

6. St Stephen's Green and Merrion Square

Two of the city's loveliest green spaces, a short walk apart. St Stephen's Green has a pond and flower beds, and Merrion Square has pretty Georgian doors and a statue of Oscar Wilde. An easy walk with plenty of benches.

7. The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham

Free to enter, in the grand Royal Hospital Kilmainham, with formal gardens outside. A fine mix of art and fresh air, and a good one for a rainy day. Check opening times before you go.

8. The National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin

Free to enter, with Victorian glasshouses, a rose garden and a riverside walk. There's lots to look at, which takes the pressure off the conversation. Check opening times before you go.

A little further afield

9. Dún Laoghaire East Pier and People's Park

A long, flat walk out along the pier to the lighthouse, with views back across the bay. Afterwards, wander up to People's Park, which has a café and a popular Sunday market. Check market days and times before you go.

10. The Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk

A well known coastal path along the cliffs in County Wicklow, with sea views and a train home from Greystones. Wear walking shoes, check the conditions and keep away from the edge.

Keep it simple

11. Coffee and a wander

Ranelagh, Stoneybatter and South William Street are all full of independent cafés and small shops. Pick one, find a table and see where the conversation goes. It's an easy first date that's simple to end after one drink.

12. A show

The Abbey, the Gaiety, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and the Olympia mean there's something on almost every night, from drama to comedy to music. It gives you something to talk about on the way home. Check what's on and book ahead.

A few tips before you go

  • Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
  • Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Check the weather, opening times and any transport disruption before you set off.
  • Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
